Are you a farmer or food steward who wants to share your knowledge of and passion for food systems with K-5 students?
What is a food steward?
A food steward is someone who is interested in or knowledgeable about food systems, but is not necessarily a farmer.
What can I teach?
Lessons everything from “parts of the plant” to permaculture. You can use one of our lessons, or you can work with our Farmer in the Classroom team to design your own lesson based on your interests.
What is the time commitment?
All farmers and food stewards are required to attend an orientation session which covers the basics of our program, and classroom management techniques. After orientation, our coordinator will be happy to work one-on-one with you (if necessary) to ensure you are prepared.
After the orientation process, the level of involvement is really up to you. You can teach one hour-long lesson per school year, or you could teach an hour-long lesson each week (we’ve never had anyone teach that much, but hey, we can dream)!
Will I be compensated?
Farmers and food stewards are given a stipend for each classroom lesson.

It’s that time of year again to let The Agrarian Adventure know what kind of transplants would find happy homes in your school garden! These seedlings are provided free of charge, and will be available for pick up at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in May.
These seedlings are grown by volunteers working with The Agrarian Adventure with the support of Matthaei Botanical Gardens. We are eager to involve students with this process as much as possible!
We will do our best to meet your requests, but producing perfect seedlings is not our highest goal: rather, we focus on growing and planting in ways that offer as many learning opportunities for students as possible!

It’s time for board nominations! Do you want to contribute to The Agrarian Adventure’s work to grow student centered farm-to-school education? Board members serve two-year terms and meet monthly to make decisions about programming, fundraising and partnerships.
Applications are available online through The Agrarian Adventure Board Nomination link until November 30th. We encourage people to fill out the form for themselves, but people may also nominate friends or colleagues that might be a good fit.
We are specifically looking for representation from:
-K-12 teachers and administrators
-Parents of K-12 students
-Farmers and food stewards (food stewards are people who have knowledge about and passion for food production and environmental stewardship – master gardeners, beekeepers, etc.)
-Chartwells or AAPS employees involved with food service
-Members of partner organizations such as the Ann Arbor Farm to School Collaborative, The Ecology Center, the Center for Regional Food Systems, Project Healthy Schools or other related organizations.

The time has come again to place requests for free seedlings, grown together by students and the Agrarian Adventure with support from the Tappan Joint Garden Committee and PTSO and Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.
Complete this survey to make a seedling request for your school garden, and spread the word to folks involved with local school gardens so that they can learn about this opportunity!
Seedling pickups will be arranged at Matthaei Botanical Gardens or the hoophouse at Tappan Middle School, and are tentatively scheduled for early May. Look for further details in April!
What did The Agrarian Adventure accomplish in 2014?
- The Farmer in the Classroom program visited 5 schools and over a dozen classrooms
- Distributed 500+ seedlings to seven participating school gardens with the help of Tappan students
- Worked alongside students at Tappan Middle School to grow approximately 200 pounds of produce at its hoophouse garden site for club activities, student families, volunteers, food pantries and fundraising activities
- Donated over 100 pounds of produce to the Backdoor Food Pantry and Food Gatherers from it’s Tappan hoophouse garden site
- Hosted a seed bomb making activity at youth tent at the 2014 Homegrown Festival
- Celebrated our 10 year anniversary with a special Pencils and Parsnips event in partnership with Tantre Farm at Zingerman’s Delicatessen

On November 5th, volunteers, farmers, teachers, parents, and students shared inspiring stories about farm to school education, and everyone enjoyed the beautiful meal created by the chefs at Zingerman’s Delicatessen. This year proceeds from the annual event called the Taste of Tantre, that highlights the bounty of Tantre Farm with seasonal eats and treats, benefited farm-to-school education in Ann Arbor!
